Tonight we want you to meet one of the calmest educators we've ever come across. That makes Meagan Harris perfectly suited to be a Special Education Teacher at Rochester's School of the Arts.
School of the Arts eighth grader Byron Carter has a personality that's well, let's just say he's energetic. And when he talks about his teacher, Meagan Harris the words gush out. "She's a kind hearted person. She's always down to earth and always looking at her students and looking forwards to them achieving their goals. She brought me from like a long way from when I was not doing so well. And she brought me up to like me doing better now. You know I look at her more than a teacher. I look at her like an inspiration and someone I would want to be like one day."
Byron says Miss Harris works hard to help students achieve their goals and he had to say thank you. When we walked into her classroom Byron ran up and gave Meagan a big hug! "Oh thank you Byron. Thank you so much. I'm a little shocked I have to say. Thank You."
"She's amazing" says Special Education Coordinator Latoya Manon. "She really is just a giving, giving selfless person. She does everything for the students.
Meagan's not afraid to challenge Byron. Here's what she said to him after our surprise. "Come here. Thank you again. So now next year that means the favor's returned. Which means you do just as well."
And Meagan is touched Byron wanted her to have a Golden Apple Award. "It's awesome. It means he's doing well himself. So I appreciate what he does."
There she goes again, always thinking about others before herself! "I think my kids deserve everything they get. So I'll do whatever it takes to get them to be successful."
Meagan Harris is a News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. You can read Byron's letter nominating her if you look below.
