Pittsford shoplifting suspect shot by Deputy identified

Vincenzo Zagari, 22, is being charged with larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempted aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, and menacing for his role in the events on Monroe Avenue Wednesday.
A man with a violent criminal history is in the hospital after he was shot by a Monroe County Sheriffs Deputy.

Vincenzo Zagari, 22, is being charged with larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempted aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, and menacing for his role in the events on Monroe Avenue Wednesday.

Around 3:30 in the afternoon, Sheriff's Deputies responded to the call of a suspected shoplifter at Wegmans. Deputies say the shoplifter, Zagari, fled the store in a car reported stolen in Ogden yesterday.

"Suspect became involved with a collision with a parked vehicle, exited the vehicle, and ran across Monroe Avenue toward the Marshall's store," Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

A female sheriff's deputy with more than 10 years on the force chased the suspect on foot after his car crashed.

"As deputies checked the area to try to find the suspect, the suspect was observed, secreted alongside the building, as the deputy approached the suspect, the individual brandished a weapon and shots were fired," O'Flynn said.

Zagari suffered life threatening injuries. The Sheriff's deputy was not injured.

O'Flynn would not release any details about the deputy except to say she has a clean record.

The sheriff's deputy who fired the shots will continue to work doing administrative duties. She will not be on patrol for at least a couple of days if not longer.

Zagari was arrested in June 2012 for a shooting in the town of Wheatland.  At the time he was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, and is currently on probation for that crime.   Investigators are trying to determine if he was involved in other crimes, including a bank robbery yesterday in Ogden.
