Pittsford Suspect Believed To Be Connected To Ogden Attempted Bank Robbery

Ogden Police say the shoplifting suspect shot Wednesday in a person of interest in the attempted robbery of an M&T Bank in Spencerport.
Ogden Police say the shoplifting suspect shot Wednesday in a person of interest in the attempted robbery of an M&T Bank in Spencerport.

Ogden Police are working closely with the Monroe County Sheriff's office to see if Zagari is connected to this attempted robbery. Surveillance cameras capture the image of a man who walked into the bank, showed a weapon and demanded cash. Police believe it may be 22-year-old Vincenzo Zagari. Zagari's senior picture shows a different side of him- one many knew.

The scholar athlete was a stand-out on the Spencerport wrestling team, serving as captain his senior year. Zagari had a 3.8 GPA when he was named to the All Greater Rochester Wrestling Team in 2009. One of Zagari's former teammates says he was a good leader and was dedicated to the sport. The teammate's mother says Zagari's parents were supportive and often had members of the team over for dinner. Zagari was highly sought after by colleges. According to the AGR list published by the Democrat & Chronicle, West Point and Stanford showed interest in the young wrestler. His dream was to become a police officer.

But on Wednesday Zagari went from an aspiring police officer to a criminal suspect. He is accused of stealing from Wegmans in Pittsford. When a sheriff deputy pursued him, Zagari allegedly fled and crashed into a parked car. Then, deputies say he tried to steal another car. All that led to the confrontation with Deputy Bridget Davis.

"He attempted to strike Deputy Davis with a hammer. At that point she engaged him with her baton and then the suspect reached into a bag and drew out a gun and pointed it towards Deputy Davis; and at that time she drew her hand gun and fired," Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn reported.

Zagari was shot in the chest and arm. He remains in guarded condition at Strong Hospital. Those close to Zagari are now left with more questions than answers as they pray he pulls through.
