Preparing For The Annual "Food For Families" Drive

Tops and News 8 are preparing for the annual initiative to make sure families do not go hungry this holiday season.

The 24-hour fundraising campaign begins Friday, but customers have already begun donating. It takes a lot of work, but Tops employees say it is worth it. One little brown bag of hope can go a long way.

"Life has been very good to me. What's a couple of dollars to some people who really need some food," Robert Weilert said.

Inside the bags you will find a variety of food items needed by Foodlink. For a few bucks, you can purchase a bag that will be donated to the local food bank. It is all part of the "Food For Families" campaign.

"It's all about helping those within the communities in which we serve. We know of course during the holiday season [that] there's a lot of people that are less fortunate, that are in need of a meal," Kathleen Graim said.

"I'm in the city a lot. I ride around and I see a lot of people that are definitely in need. There's not doubt about it," Weilert said.

Two weeks ago, Tops employees prepared the brown bags. The campaign goes all week. But Friday comes the biggest push.

"It's hectic to say the least, but at the end of the day it's all worth it and it's great to see everybody together," Gino Demino said.

A day-long outdoor food drive where volunteers from Tops and WROC-TV collect food and funds at local Tops stores.

"I love giving back to the community. We have a lot of great customers here and it's really nice to show them what we do for the community," Demino said.

"This is a very giving community we live in, so it's good. It doesn't matter what store I go in. Somebody out front, you throw a couple of bucks in," Weilert said.

The need is great, but you can help- one bag at a time. Last year the team raised $50,000 and almost 50,000 pounds of food. This year, Tops hopes to exceed that.
