A bill designed to help older Americans and their families is getting key support from a local lawmaker. Republican Tom Reed, who represents the 23rd Congressional District, is co-sponsoring a bill that would renew funding for the Older Americans Act. It supports a wide range of services such as Meals-on-Wheels, in-home services, transportation and caregiver support. It was supposed to be reauthorized in 2011 but failed to get enough support. Advocates for the elderly have urged lawmakers to act. Reed is one of three Republicans in the GOP-controlled house to do so. Similar legislation is being considered in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.
