Times are tough for a lot of families right now, especially during the holidays.

That is why the Salvation Army is stepping in to help. The organization held its annual Christmas Assistance Distribution event Wednesday. It is an effort to get toys and food to families who are struggling. Baskets were put together and then delivered. Major Douglas Hart says he wants every child to experience a nice holiday.

"I have a daughter, and I remember all of those Christmas mornings. I like to make sure the children that come to us that will have that same experience that my daughter will. And that they will be able to sit down at a family table and have a nice meal together," Hart said.

Those families who did receive food and toys had to apply for the assistance program back in November.
