The Hunt For Holiday Jobs

Local stores are already beginning to hire for the holidays.
Local stores are already beginning to hire for the holidays.

Forty percent of Americans start looking for gifts before Halloween, and shopping steadily increases as we get closer to the holidays. That is good news for local retailers and job seekers. Jordan DeCramer, 21, of Greece spends most of his day looking for work. He has been out of work for more than a year.

"[I've had] odd jobs here and there. I have a friend; he's a painter and sometimes he'll call me and I'll go work with him for a couple days," he said.

With a one-year-old daughter and son due in December, Jordan is hoping to land one of the thousands of seasonal jobs that will be available this year in the Rochester area.

"I'm hoping it could turn into something long term, that would be wonderful," he said.

If you are looking for a new job, now is a good time to apply. Stores like Target say they will start getting busy soon.

"A few of our guests already have their holiday kids catalogs in hand, they got them in the mail yesterday, so they're already in here today looking for the hot toys," store manager Shannon Ligammari said.

For DeCramer, getting in on the holiday buzz would be life-changing.

"It would make everything better; Christmas, birthdays, all of that," he said.

Retaliers are not the only ones hiring during the busy holiday season. Transportation and manufacturing companies often add staff to handle the rush.
