Tips to Avoid Overspending Over Holidays

Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Rochester has some advice to stay out of financial trouble.
After the first of the year, Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Rochester sees more people come in for help managing their debt. Some charged a lot of Christmas gifts, before paying off what they charged the previous holiday season. Consumers find they can't pay their monthly bills when debt is too high.

Lynette Baker of CCCS advises people to only spend what they have in the bank. She acknowledges that's not always possible, so if you have to charge gifts, she suggests being able to pay off the balance within a few months.

Baker says people should have a budget before going into the season. CCCS has an online tool to help plan a budget.
