Thee government shutdown forced the United States Merchant Marine Academy to cancel or postpone Saturday's homecoming game with the U of R Yellow Jackets. Being that this upcoming weekend is Meliora weekend at the U of R, the school found it essential to find a replacement so that the centerpiece homecoming football game could go on. The University of Rochester will now play Alfred State for Saturday's big homecoming game. The homecoming is more than just a football game for students, staff and alumni. It is a social gathering at the gridiron that brings old friendships back to life and makes new memories.

"Oh I think it's great. I think everyone's excited. I mean, it's awesome because kind of the whole Rochester community is coming together this weekend, so, it's nice to come and support our football team that's doing great this year. So, I think everyone's really excited," freshman Jamie Wallisch said.

"Homecoming is a tradition, no matter where you go. Everybody wants to go to see the athletic event. For the schools that don't have football, and soccer's their big Fall sport, they may build a big key soccer match as their event. But people want to come out and watch sports. Go to their class reunions, go to a couple of other things," Athletic Communications director Dennis O'Donnell said.

Delta Kappa Epsilo's Alumni Association last night offered to foot the bill for U.S. MMA to come play, but there were some issues around the legality of that happening. Regardless, the homecoming game will go on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Alfred State instead
