Vargas Defends Teacher Evaluations

900 city teachers rated poorly.
During an appearance on News 8 First at 4, Dr. Bolgen Vargas defended the teacher evaluation system used by the district. Nine hundred teachers out of 3,200 were rated developing or ineffective. Hundreds are appealing their scores. Meanwhile, some suburban districts had zero teachers rated poorly.

"I believe in continuous improvement and the new evaluation system allows us to evaluate teachers in a way in which some of us have to be in improvement plan and that shouldn't surprise anyone," Vargas said. "We are not using the evaluation system to punish teachers."
