Von Maur Breaking Holiday Shopping Trend

Von Maur opened its doors at Eastview Mall last month, and the retailer is already shaking up holiday shopping.

In a time when many stores are opening earlier on Thanksgiving Day than ever before, Von Maur is closing early. The Black Friday craze has trampled on Thanksgiving Day but Von Maur isn't caving in.

"We are closed all day on Thanksgiving and on Black Friday we open at 9, so just one hour earlier, and even the day prior to Thanksgiving we close at four, which is a little bit earler than the rest of the mall," Von Maur manager Jessica Stetler said.

Some shoppers like the idea.

"I think it's a great idea. I think that opening earlier and earlier and trying to push the holidays earlier and earlier trying to get people that should be spending time with their families and so forth to come out and shop is so silly," shopper Barbara Christensen said.

Others see it differently.

"I think that's okay. I think everybody should spend time with their family and then go out later," shopper Tamara Dewart said.

The Von Maur store at Eastview Mall is the first location in the Northeast. The Von Maur family has owned the chain for 140 years and prides itself on family values.

"It's something that I personally appreciate and I feel very honored we can allow our employees to enjoy that time with their friends and family," Stetler said.

Von Maur also won't be offering any crazy doorbusters or rock bottom prices.

"Our business isn't based off of promotional driven sales. We will have some different purchases that they can make that we will have limited quantities of, but it's really not anything extreme," Stetler said.

Von Maur will also close early on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.
