Warren's Uncle Resigns As Head Of Security Detail

Mayor Lovely Warren's uncle has decided to resign as her personal security detail.
Mayor Lovely Warren's uncle has decided to resign as her personal security detail.

Reggie Hill had been on suspension for getting stopped for speeding on the New York State Thruway twice while transporting the mayor to the State of the State Address. Hill's appointment had been controversial from the start. He was paid $80,000. Warren created this new position, called Director of Executive Services, without advertising it. She said the money for the position came from the mayor's budget, which has a surplus.

Since Hill's appointment and the appointment of the Associate Director of Executive Services, the Civil Service Commission has approved the jobs and they have been advertised. The jobs had previously been approved on a temporary basis.

Questions have been raised about whether hiring her uncle was nepotism, and why she needed a security detail in the first place. In a statement, City Hall Communications Director Chris Christopher said "I want to be very clear that this is a decision that Mr. Hill has come to on his own. He told me personally he no longer wants to be a distraction from the important work that Mayor Warren was elected to do. There has never been any question about Mr. Hill's unique qualifications for the position, or the need for his services."

The city's Board of Ethics plans to do a review of the appointments to the security detail, including whether Civil Service rules were followed.
