Why ROC: Economic impact of PGA Championship

PGA Championship Director Ryan Cannon and Greater Rochester Enterprise President & CEO Mark Peterson discussed the economic impact of next week's PGA Championship Wednesday morning on our Why ROC segment on News 8 at Sunrise.
PGA Championship Director Ryan Cannon and Greater Rochester Enterprise President and CEO Mark Peterson discussed the local economic impact of next week's PGA Championship in our Why ROC segment Wednesday morning on News 8 at Sunrise.

Cannon said the decision to host the major championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford is a result of several factors, first and foremost is the golf course itself.  "The East Course here at Oak Hill has proven over the test of time that it has stood up to the best players in the world," he said.

In addition, Cannon said the operational feasability of hosting a modern major championship is considered and the community's affinity for the game of golf.  Identifying regional partners in the philanthropic, governmental, corporate and media realm helps solidify a decision.

Peterson said there are tangible and intangible benefits for the local economy.  The GRE team estimates the 95th PGA Championship will yield a $78 million economic impact - including direct, indirect and induced income and spending.  In addition, over a thousand temporary, full-time and part-time jobs will be added.  "It's an opportunity to shine a bright light on the greater Rochester region," said Peterson.  He said business leaders and golf enthusiasts from around the country will see what the region has to offer.

Cannon noted the international field of players that will assemble for the tournament gives the course and city worldwide exposure.  "The PGA Championship is one of the most highly televised sporting events in the world," he said.  Two hundred countries will see the PGA Championship broadcast with the potential reach of almost 500 million homes.

Practice rounds for the 95th PGA Championship begin Monday, August 5 at Oak Hill Country Club.  The tournament runs August 8-11.
