The Buffalo Bisons scored three runs in the fifth inning, then hung on to beat the Red Wings 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.
The first run came on a Ryan Langerhans homers, but the last two were donated by the Wings when Joe Benson dropped a routine fly ball in left field. Ryan Goins cruised into second on the play, and scored on an Anthony Gose single. Gose later scored on what would have been the fourth out of the inning, making both runs unearned thanks to the Benson drop.
Evan Bigley had three hits, and Chris Herrmann had two hits and an RBI for he Wings, who were out-hit 11-10 by Buffalo.
The Bisons came out swinging against Rochester starter Liam Hendriks. On the first pitch of the game, Buffalo's Jim Negrych lashed a ground rule double that bounced into the Red Wings bullpen. Negrych came around to score on a single by Moises Sierra for an early 1-0 Buffalo lead.
The first two Rochester batters reached base against Bisons start Edgar Gonzalez (1-0), courtesy of singles by Eric Farris and Ray Olmedo. When Clete Thomas followed with a single to left field, the Wings had a perfect first inning set up for cleanup hitter Chris Colabello. The Wings were only hitting .174 as a team with the bases loaded coming into the game; Colabello grounded into a double play, but Farris scored to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second, Buffalo's defense took away potential Red Wing hits. Joe Benson hit a ball hard down the third base line but Andy LaRoche made a fine play to throw out Benson at first. Also Herrmann, who hit a ball deep to right but Moises Sierra robbed Herrmann of a hit.
After striking out the first batter of the third, Hendriks (0-2) gave up two singles and a fly ball, to put base runners on first and third with two outs. A single from Sierra scored Ryan Goins from third to give the Bisons the lead, 2-1. Buffalo then tacked on the three runs in the 5th
Hendriks pitched five innings, giving up five runs, of which three were earned.
Olmedo walked on four pitched to begin the bottom of the sixth for the Wings. After a pop out, Colabello fell behind in the count 0-2. But after working the count full, Colabello doubled down the right field line to score Olmedo from first. Reliever Mickey Storey came in to pitch to Brian Dinkelman. After Dinkelman walked, a bloop single to left by Benson loaded the bases with only one out. Herrmann lined a ball into left field to score Colabello making the score 5-3. A pair of pop outs ended the Red Wings threat and left the bases loaded for the Wings in the sixth.
After a two out walk and a stolen base, Thomas was at second with Colabello at bat in the bottom of the seventh. But a deep fly ball to center field ended the inning.
Daniel Turpen came into the eighth inning to pitch the last two innings for Rochester. Robertson went two innings, striking out two. Turpen got two broken bat ground ball outs to start the inning. After giving up a single, Turpen struck out Langerhans to end the inning.
The Wings got a two-out rally started when Herrmann singled into right. Bigley lined a ball back up the middle that hit Bisons pitcher Bobby Korecky in the left arm. Neil Wagner came into pitch to Bernier, replacing Korecky. Bernier grounded out to end the inning.
Turpen struck out the side in the top of the ninth, giving him four consecutive strikeouts.
