Wings Throw Away Game In Lehigh Valley

Olmedo throwing error leads to winning run in 3-2 defeat
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the top two hitters in the lineup combined for four hits, as they defeated the Rochester Red Wings 3-2 Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jermaine Mitchell beat out an infield single to begin the frame. Cesar Hernandez followed with a bunt to third, which Red Wings third baseman Ray Olmedo threw in to center field trying to nail Mitchell at second base. The speedy outfielder popped up and scored standing up on the play to give the home side a 3-2 lead, before Jake Diekman earned his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Mitchell and Hernandez got the offense going to the 'Pigs. With two outs and no one aboard, Mitchell singled to right field and promptly stole second base. Hernandez then doubled to the left-center field gap, scoring Mitchell for a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth frame the IronPigs (18-24) added to their lead, as this time the bottom of the order came to life, starting when Pete Orr singled and swiped second base. Later in the frame Michael Martinez tripled down the right field line, scoring Orr and putting Lehigh Valley ahead 2-0.

The Red Wings (17-26) scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth inning, as Chris Colabello singled up the middle to score Chris Herrmann. The next batter Jeff Clement extended the inning as well, driving in Nate Hanson on a single to right field to tie the game 2-2.

Raul Valdes was superb in his first outing of the season with the IronPigs, tossing four shutout innings and allowing just two hits. Zach Miner (2-3) got the win with four innings of relief, surrendering two runs on four hits. Caleb Thielbar (1-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up an unearned run on one hit and one walk in the eighth in relief of  P.J. Walters, who allowed two runs on seven hits in seven frames.

Mitchell and Hernandez each finished 2-for-4 as Mitchell scored a pair of runs. Cody Asche, Humberto Quintero, Orr and Martinez had the others hits for Lehigh Valley, as they finished with eight on the night.

Game two of the four-game series pits IronPigs lefty Tom Cochran (0-1, 5.65) against Rochester RHP Kyle Gibson (2-5, 3.92). First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park.
