Wings Walkoff Win With Little League Homer

Nishioka's game tying single in 9th turns into game winning run after Toledo error

The Red Wings came back from an early deficit, then finished off the Toledo Mud Hens with two ninth inning runs, in a wild 8-7 win Sunday night at Frontier Field. The Wings travel to Norfolk and Durham having won eight of their last nine games, and return home July 24 to host Syracuse Chiefs.

The Wings trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, but Sean Burroughs made it to second base after a throwing error on a ground ball. After a strikeout, Tsuyoshi Nishioka laced a single to score Burroughs and tie the game. Catcher Rob Brantly threw to second attempting to catch Nishioka, but the throw sailed out of the infield and past the center fielder, allowing Nishioka to come all the way around to score the winning run.

Wings righthander Esmerling Vasquez took the mound coming in with a 3-4 record and a 3.22 ERA. Toledo's Brooks Brown was given the start coming in with a 1-3 record and a 5.03 ERA.

Toledo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Rob Brantly hit a sacrifice fly to score John Lindsey. Vasquez was able to escape the inning when Ryan Strieby grounded out with two runners on to end the inning.

The Mud Hens scored another run in the top of the second when Audy Ciriaco hit a solo home run, making the score 2-0 Toledo.

In the bottom of the second with Danny Valencia on third, Clete Thomas grounded into a 4-3 scoring Valencia in the process to reduce Toledo's lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Brendan Wise came in to relieve Vasquez who pitched three innings with three hits, two earned runs, and one strikeout. With Wise pitching, Toledo extended their lead when Ryan Strieby hit a solo home run to take a 3-1 lead. Toledo added two more runs when Audy Ciriaco scored on an error and Cale Lorg scored on a ground out, making the score 5-1 Toledo.

The Wings tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 5-4 Toledo. Thomas scored Chris Parmelee and Valencia with a single and Sean Burroughs scored when third baseman Bryan Pounds made a fielding error on a J.R. Towles ground ball.

An opportunity arose for the Wings in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Carson led off with a single. Carson advanced when he stole second, his seventh stolen base of the season. Carson then reached third on a wild pitch, but the Wings were unable to score Carson as left fielder Cale Lorg made a diving catch on Burroughs to end the inning.

Dan Sattler relieved Wise to start the top of the sixth. Wise pitched 2 innings, with four hits, and three runs (one earned). Sattler surrendered one run in the sixth when Matt Young hit an RBI single to score Justin Henry, giving Toledo a two run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wings loaded the bases with two outs, putting the tying run on second, but Toledo escaped when Carson flew out to third to end the inning, keeping the score at 6-4 Toledo.

The Mud Hens extended their lead to 7-5 in the top of the eighth when Henry scored on a pass ball.

The Wings scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Carson hit an RBI single to score Towles, followed by a Parmelee single that scored Brian Dinkelman to make the score 7-6 Toledo.
